well...
i am happy to report that my hubby is up & out of bed... and back to himself...
what a stinker of a bug!

we've been busy bees today...
like we've got some sort of winter hibernation preparation thing going or something!
that "to do" list was getting lots of check marks!

one thing that was on the "to do" was that armoire.
i totally forgot to get a before picture of the front...
was all too eager i suppose.
anywho... you know the type of furniture... right?
mexican import style.
i purchased it from pier i... back when i was single...
and could barely save up a dime.
i was so proud of myself!
i had purchased my first "grown up" sofa then too.
"awwwwe"...
i have such fond memories of my cute little apartment in austin texas.
those were some fun years!

my hubby walked in at this point... as i was painting... and said...
"there's no turning back now".
yep... the paint was ON!

i had not purchased new hinges... so i wanted to try to make these work.
did a dry brush over them... and i think it works.

right here is where i will insert the...
DISCLAIMER... :O)!
i by NO means am a professional furniture refinisher!
i am just a gal that has experimented lots... tried it lots...
and sure have fun doing it!

as i began to paint... cover it... in a punch of rojo...
i began to realize that this baby was not going to need ANY distressing.
for pete's sake... the wood... the build... it's quirky imperfections...
were going to be enough!

and i covered it good in rojo... two coats... the top... and all of the inside too.
i could have used a primer... perhaps... kilz...
went with my gut... and just let the knots & character bleed through.

i have to say... i am giddy with the results!
super happy!
i think she got a whole new life... like a pretty new lipstick!
i love the way it makes my super comfy... favorite... sheets sing!

so now when we're in our room...
watching tv on our 1991 sony trinitron... oh yeah... it still works...
there is a fun new armoire staring back!

and...
since i was in the painting mood... and had NOTHING ELSE TO DO... ha...
and since kelley asked about the process i use... why not...
did you see that white stool i was standing on?
got that ions ago too... at ikea.
it was one of those bare wood... put it together yourself... stools.
it was in need of a quick pick me up too!

this... i sprayed with a primer for sure... it was like a hungry sponge.
grabbed what primer we had in the garage... and sprayed away.
same thing with the paint...
i still had some on hand... from this and this... "cloudless blue".

once i got the blue on... i thought...
it might be fun in apple green with a little blue peeking through!

 so... i sprayed away.
oh... and on the spray vs the brush/roll on... for me... it's a toss up.
depends on the piece... how large... how detailed...
if it can be brushed on simply... you know... it all depends.
there are just so many great colors out there.
wow!
and since i don't own a paint compressor...
it's the brush on... roll on... method many times.

okay... so the green is on... certainly could have left it as is was but...
that blue wanted to peek through... and i was wanting a worn look.

oh... and sorry about the dark pictures too... we were having a GREAT gloomy day...
with RAIN... oh we need rain!

now that the green dried...
somewhat... sometimes i like to dig in when it is still "tacky"...
i got the mouse ready.
i so love my mouse... use her all the time... she makes things so much easier!
if you do not have a sander... certainly a sanding sponge works great!

i almost always... start at the feet... why... i have NO idea...
and "wear down" the edges... the sharp corners.
from there it is such a personal preference.
how worn... how aged.
she... the stool... certainly could have stayed at this stage too.
i wanted a bit more depth though.
so i sanded down edges... and places... that might normally have wear.

to add some more depth...
i really like using gel stain... however...
a raw umber... burnt umber... will do the trick.
and since i didn't have a gel stain on hand... good 'ol acrylic it was.
i always have a wet rag/wet paper towels... and a dry right there.

you can use a rag... a brush... or i usually grab a sponge brush.
put a bit of the umber on the rag or sponge & apply to all the sanded areas.
so it gets into that raw wood... and then wipe it away...
either wipe with the dry or wet...
depending on how much dark you want to stay behind.
does that make sense?
you can also wet a rag... add the umber... and wipe over the entire piece...
gives it an all over darkening.

i then took the sponge brush... that was dry by now...
and rubbed it more in the "worn" areas.
on a stool i thought it was fitting... with all the feet stepping there.
i think it gives it a "lived in"... "aged"... feel.

oh my word... these pictures are really dark!
again... sorry!

and... that's pretty much it.
a rough explanation... yes... i am sure it is but... it is that simple!
there ARE so many ways... techniques... options... for sure.
this is just one way... i have found... that works for me!

and that fast... she's already in use!

after all the "to do's"... it was time for a little glass of vino!
red of course.
this is where i sat as i made this post...
now... i am heading to a sofa... to watch seven years in tibet... with the hubby!

sure hope you're having a great weekend too!
♥

before the chickadees are awake of course.

i love this time.
it’s quiet…
the sun is brimming…
the possibilities are stirring…

then the panic sets in…
i better GET READY… i am LATE!

here’s to a goody…
a Thursday FILLED to the brim with JUST what you NEED!

i spy RED…
