brown eyed fox

their own little rodeo

so...
before the "little incident" (how my husband... todd... referred to it)...
when my hubby called home the other night...
for me to get online & quickly find them a hosptal.
more on that in a sec...

we went to a ranch to meet the horses they would be taking on their adventure...
the next morning... bright and early.
five horses in all... bob... ernie... cody...
and i don't recall the other horses names...
maybe ornery one & ornery two!

this was joe... a ranch hand on four legs.

we especially loved the little miniature horse...
the girls REALLY wanted to ride that one.

campbell was fascinated with the tires... being bigger than she.

they had three babies that had just been weaned from their mama...
just hours before.
they were neighing up a storm!

the girls were asked if they wanted to hop on for a ride.

of course... lil bit would be the first one to say "okaaaay"!
and after a bit of nudging... campbell hopped on for a quick ride too.

such an exciting time!
my dad and hubby were all smiles!
their big adventure was just ahead!

the next morning...
my dad... my step-mom (who deserves some sort of big medal)...
and todd... were off.
heading out to the mountains... near the tetons... with smiles on their faces!

meanwhile... the girls & i were home.
it might have been thursday but... they had NO school the next day...
so we were living it up like it was friday!
settled in later that night to watch a movie.
when about fifteen mintutes in... the phone rings... mind you...
i know there is no phone service where the cabin is.
"maybe they were just going to touch base"... i thought.

todd says... "um... everyone is okay... we just had a little incident...
i need you to look up... find... the nearest hospital".
i did NOT like those words AT ALL!
"your dad & i were thrown from our horses...
we're just a little bruised".

after searching... and searching... i mean to tell you...
i could not find anything!
thinking they might have to continue to drive on...
my dad says... "just call 911".
ha... and from the man that just landed head first!
they led them right to an emergency clinic.
thank goodness!

basically what happened...
they had all gotten to the cabin...
unloaded all the vehicles... all the equipment... all the stuff...
for the next week...
when they decide to saddle up the horses & head out for a look around.
on their way back to the cabin...
the lead horse took off... up the side of the mountain...
then the next horse...
and then my step-mom's horse followed suit... way too fast & unsteady.
worried about her... and in all the commotion... my dad recalls...
catching air and then coming back down on the horses rump...
when he bucked...
propelling my dad like the rodeo man he always wanted to be...
just not NOW...
up in the air...
to land on his head & right shoulder.
the very thought... makes my stomach SICK!

todd... abruptly off his horse too... landed face first.
again... the very THOUGHT!

now shawn & the others having gotten control of their horses...
make it over to dad & todd.
they were "out"...
dazed!

just at this moment...
a truck off in the distance notices what is happening...
and comes to help.
talk about a perfectly timed blessing!
and one of the men happens to have some ems training.
they locked arms & carried my dad to the truck bed...
to get them back to camp.

once back at camp... they switched trucks to head for help.
about twenty minutes up the road... where there is now phone coverage...
this is where they called us...
as we were watching furry vengeance... and eating popcorn.

i have to say... once they made it to the clinic i had a tiny sense of relief.
someone to assess their injuries... someone to help them.
as we waited for word.

i had mentioned before that todd came out the better of the two...
some scratches on his face & possible broken nose...
if indeed his nose did break...
it still looks great!
and a wrist that is still quite swollen...
that will be looked at monday by an orthopedic surgeon.
the stinky thing... it's his left wrist and he's a lefty.

my dad has stitches above his eye...
cracked ribs...
his collar bone broke right in two...
and on his OTHER arm...
a lateral break in his wrist.
all being seen again by the ortho surgeon monday.
needless to say... it's been quite a painful few days.

even though i am not a bit surprised... because he's just like that...
dad sure has kept his humor in it all.
we have laaaaaaughed!
like last night...
as we all laughed our heads off when shawn (step-mom) brushed his teeth!

and when they made it back into town here...
at the local hospital... he asked the doctor (who loved the idea)
to write up two special prescriptions...
campbell's piggy and riley's poodle were to by his side... to care for him.

another neat thing... their dogs...
that had made the trip from texas with them...
were very eager to see them...
and certainly happy to be by his side... and take care of him.

has this whole thing been a bit of the pits?
has it been a total shock?
been really painful?
totally not what was planned?
yes... yes... and more yes!
BUT...
we are just SO grateful... SO thankful...
they are all here with us... safe... and their bodies WILL mend!

no... wasn't what was planned but...
for some reason... somehow... some way... it worked out for the better.

dad & shawn have said several times...
just how wonderful everyone has been along the way.
at the hospital... the clinic... perfect strangers.
i sure love how they can see so much good in the midst of the not so good.

we sure appreciate you too thinking of them...
and praying for them...
thank you so much...
it sure brought much comfort... in such a scary time.

and now... the healing begins!
