and talked to the big man above.
it was great.

when we were in the building phase...
i hopped between many different "under the stairs" options...
kind of made myself nuts actually...
but in the end it boiled down to needing the space and storage in the art room.

we really wanted a one story... but our lot wouldn't have it... too small.
we did manage to put all of our everyday living on the main level though.
with exercise (or flex room) and the guest suite upstairs.
anywho...
my point was... we had to have stairs.

having made the area... under the stairs... a closet...
the doorway... being under the stairs and all...
had to be shorter than the eight foot doors in the rest of house.
well... it stuck out like a sore thumb... my hubby says i'm nuts... but it did!  :)

plus... the door seemed to intrude upon the space too.
so... we took the door off it's hidges and i headed to the local building supplier.

Untitled

they had an eight foot hollow core for a deal!
done!
imagine though... any door would be great.
salvaged... oh... one with glass if behind it is pretty... even tall shutters.

the hubs & i headed to the home improvement...
where we grabbed the galvanized pipe... fittings... and casters.

Untitled Untitled

sanded it down and gave it a couple coats of chalkboard paint.
leaving the edge the bare wood... but i just loved the way it looked.
you could leave it bare... cover in cork... paint it a cool pattern.
endless options.

two casters on the door's bottom...
two large eye bolts at the top.
we threaded the pipe through...
then mounted the flanges to elbows (we used 1/2 inch)...
then to pipe...
then to the wall studs.
hung.

Untitled Untitled

so now... we just push/slide/roll... the door aside to get to the supplies inside.
no more little sore thumb door.
just a big chalkboard door... in your face.  :)
ha!

Untitled Untitled

i say... more fun though.
sometimes she wears words... simple doodles... just random thoughts.
why not?!

Untitled

i knew i had to give it a try... see.
sometimes you go into projects or changes and have no idea the outcome.
but if you don't try... you'll never know.
the trying part... it's awfully fun too.

do you have a change you've been dying to make...
tweak something...
a sore thumb of some shape or form?

why not just try something?
see.
:)

this post will look oddly like the last post... but it just worked out that way.
i took these photos prior to leaving last weekend...
oh the fun (more on that later)...
but ran out of time to post before leaving.

i've been getting lots of messages about these ledges and frames...
so i thought i'd do a quick share.

we've done versions of these before... one here... and loved it so much...
we decided... yep... let's do that again.
i love how my sweet hubby dives in & helps me.
he's so handy & supportive like that... very thankful.

Untitled Untitled

we went with red oak wood this time.
because of the strong grain... i ended up painting them a heavy white wash look.

didn't want them too deep... but deep enough for layering frames...
so we went with... for each ledge... two 1x4's and one 1x2.

drilled pilot holes through back of 1x4 (at base)...
and edge of bottom (ledge) 1x4.
then screwing through back of 1x4 into edge of bottom (ledge) 1x4.
the 1x2 was simply attached with small finish nails.
we went straight through the back 1x4 into wall studs.
i could hang off these things they're so sturdy.
wait... i did.
gotta to test.

for reference... we made each 10 feet long.
but... of course... they could be any length by cutting or combining.

Untitled

i like their simplicity... their ease... how i can switch things up whenever.
they're pretty neato like that.

Untitled Untitled

the frames i used here are super inexpensive... especially when on sale.
hobby lobby... like these...
and michaels... like these.
basically... the really simple plastic or metal frames.
they seem to do the trick... give the overall feel i'm after...
keeping things light & open.
any frames... of any color & size... are certainly great... perfect.

UntitledUntitled Untitled

so far i've only had them hold frames...
but goodness... you could pop lots in there.
art.
books... perfect for kids room.
treasured knacks.
there are loads & loads of options.
and if you google picture ledges... loads & loads of inspiration.

Untitled
and this one... mabel... sat there the whole time watching me snap.
sweet little thing...
and her sopping wet chin.
she sticks her whole face in the water bowl.
silly goose.

hope your week is off to a super start.
your smile is big... your hope high.
it's gonna be a good one!
